老人与海读后感英文版
when i was a middle school student, i’ve finished this book in chinese.but when i read it in english,i really gain something new both in the way of expression and the spirit it shows to us.may be different ages to read the same book we will learn different things from it.at least, for my part, that is true.
firstly,i would like to review some information about this book.such as the background, major characters and the topic of it.
the old man and the sea is a story by ernest hemingway, written in cuba in 1951 and published in 1952. it was the last major work of fiction to be produced by hemingway and published in his lifetime. one of his most famous works, it centers upon santiago, an aging cuban fisherman who struggles with a giant marlin far out in the gulf stream.
the old man and the sea served to reinvigorate hemingway's literary reputation and prompted a reexamination of his entire body of work. the novella was initially received with much popularity; it restored many readers' confidence in hemingway's capability as an author. its publisher, scribner's, on an early dust jacket, called the novella a "new classic," and many critics favorably compared it with such works as william faulkner's "the bear" and herman melville's moby-dick.
this book gives me a deep impression especially the description about the man’s braveness and persistence.
in this book, in order to suggest the profundity of the old man’s sacrifice and the glory that derives from it, hemingway purposefully likens santiago to christ, who, according to christian theology, gave his life for the greater glory of humankind. crucifixion imagery is the most noticeable way in which hemingway creates the symbolic parallel between santiago and christ. when santiago’s palms are first cut by his fishing line, the reader cannot help but think of christ suffering his stigmata. later, when the sharks arrive, hemingway portrays the old man as a crucified martyr, saying that he makes a noise similar to that of a man having nails driven through his hands. furthermore, the image of the old man struggling up the hill with his mast across his shoulders recalls christ’s march toward calvary. even the position in which santiago collapses on his bed—face down with his arms out straight and the palms of his hands up—brings to mind the image of christ suffering on the cross. hemingway employs these images in the final pages of the novella in order to link santiago to christ, who exemplified transcendence by turning loss into gain, defeat into triumph, and even death into renewed life.
the major characters in this book are also vivid and lively.
santiago?,the old man of the novella’s title, santiago is a cuban fisherman who has had an extended run of bad luck. despite his expertise, he has been unable to catch a fish for eighty-four days. he is humble, yet exhibits a justified pride in his abilities. his knowledge of the sea and its creatures, and of his craft, is unparalleled and helps him preserve a sense of hope regardless of circumstance.
the marlin?,santiago hooks the marlin, which we learn at the end of the novella measures eighteen feet, on the first afternoon of his fishing expedition. manolin?,a boy presumably in his adolescence, manolin is santiago’s apprentice and devoted attendant. the old man first took him out on a boat when he was merely five years old. due to santiago’s recent bad luck, manolin’s parents have forced the boy to go out on a different fishing boat. manolin, however, still cares deeply for the old man, to whom he continues to look as a mentor.
joe dimaggio, although dimaggio never appears in the novel, he plays a significant role nonetheless. santiago worships him as a model of strength and commitment, and his thoughts turn toward dimaggio whenever he needs to reassure himself of his own strength. perico ?,perico, the reader assumes, owns the bodega in santiago’s village. he never appears in the novel, but he serves an important role in the fisherman’s life by providing him with newspapers that report the baseball scores. this act establishes him as a kind man who helps the aging santiago.
martin, like perico, martin, a café owner in santiago’s village, does not appear in the story. the reader learns of him through manolin, who often goes to martin for santiago’s supper. as the old man says, martin is a man of frequent kindness who deserves to be repaid.
from the very first paragraph, santiago is characterized as someone struggling against defeat. he has gone eighty-four days without catching a fish—he will soon pass his own record of eighty-seven days. almost as a reminder of santiago’s struggle, the sail of his skiff resembles “the flag of permanent defeat.” but the old man refuses defeat at every turn: he resolves to sail out beyond the other fishermen to where the biggest fish promise to be. he lands the marlin, tying his record of eighty-seven days after a brutal three-day fight, and he continues to ward off sharks from stealing his prey, even though he knows the battle is useless.
because santiago is pitted against the creatures of the sea, some readers choose to view the tale as a chronicle of man’s battle against the natural world, but the novella is, more accurately, the story of man’s place within nature. both santiago and the marlin display qualities of pride, honor, and bravery, and both are subject to the same eternal law: they must kill or be killed. as santiago reflects when he watches the weary warbler fly toward shore, where it will inevitably meet the hawk, the world is filled with predators, and no living thing can escape the inevitable struggle that will lead to its death. santiago lives according to his own observation: “man is not made for defeat . . . [a] man can be destroyed but not defeated.” in hemingway’s portrait of the world, death is inevitable, but the best men (and animals) will nonetheless refuse to give in to its power. accordingly, man and fish will struggle to the death, just as hungry sharks will lay waste to an old man’s trophy catch.
the novel suggests that it is possible to transcend this natural law. in fact, the very inevitability of destruction creates the terms that allow a worthy man or beast to transcend it. it is precisely through the effort to battle the inevitable that a man can prove himself. indeed, a man can prove this determination over and over through the worthiness of the opponents he chooses to face. santiago finds the marlin worthy of a fight, just as he once found “the great negro of cienfuegos” worthy. hsantiago, though destroyed at the end of the novella, is never defeated. instead, he emerges as a hero. santiago’s struggle does not enable him to change man’s place in the world. rather, it enables him to meet his most dignified destiny.
while it is certainly true that santiago’s eighty-four-day run of bad luck is an affront to his pride as a masterful fisherman, and that his attempt to bear out his skills by sailing far into the gulf waters leads to disaster, hemingway does not condemn his protagonist for being full of pride. on the contrary, santiago stands as proof that pride motivates men to greatness. because the old man acknowledges that he killed the mighty marlin largely out of pride, and because his capture of the marlin leads in turn to his heroic transcendence of defeat, pride becomes the source of santiago’s greatest strength. without a ferocious sense of pride, that battle would never have been fought, or more likely, it would have been abandoned before the end.
santiago’s pride also motivates his desire to transcend the destructive forces of nature. throughout the novel, no matter how baleful his circumstances become, the old man exhibits an unflagging determination to catch the marlin and bring it to shore. when the first shark arrives, santiago’s resolve is mentioned twice in the space of just a few paragraphs. even if the old man had returned with the marlin intact, his moment of glory, like the marlin’s meat, would have been short-lived. the glory and honor santiago accrues comes not from his battle itself but from his pride and determination to fight.
santiago dreams his pleasant dream of the lions at play on the beaches of africa three times. the first time is the night before he departs on his three-day fishing expedition, the second occurs when he sleeps on the boat for a few hours in the middle of his struggle with the marlin, and the third takes place at the very end of the book. in fact, the sober promise of the triumph and regeneration with which the novella closes is supported by the final image of the lions. because santiago associates the lions with his youth, the dream suggests the circular nature of life. additionally, because santiago imagines the lions, fierce predators, playing, his dream suggests a harmony between the opposing forces—life and death, love and hate, destruction and regeneration—of nature.
this book gives me courage of conquering all kinds of difficulties .and i have the belief that the most beautiful thing is the process that we make our best to achieve our dream, and never say give up .

《特洛伊》英文读后感
i have never been to troy, but david maule made me feel as if i were standing on the high wall of troy, watching the fierce war. thanks to this british author, who adapted the famous homer’s poem into a lively story, i found it easier to understand this story.
though the story happened over 3000 years ago in a remote place, i was deeply fascinated by it. the mysterious plot is one of the reasons why i loved the story of troy so much, yet i am more interested in the human heroes of the war.
hector was the eldest son of king of troy, priam. he was not only a real hero of trojan, but was regarded the highest moral hero in greek classic by later historians.
the war started because of the mischief of his brother, paris, whom he didn’t appreciate. however, since hector was the commander of the trojan army, he was obliged to fight with all force. it was really a tragedy that such a valiant man died in the duel with another great warrior, achilles.
it is natural to see death in a war. as a famous chinese parable says, “a life can be as slight as a piece of feather, or as weighty as mount tai.” sometimes, one’s glory walks hand in hand with one’s doom. achilles was such a typical person. his personal charm made the story of troy more attractive.
he was so crucial because his every appearance in a war encouraged his fellow soldiers and terrified the enemies. actually, achilles was half-god who was almost invincible in people’s mind. that’s why his name was memorized long after his death.
besides the two great men, the wisdom of odysseus also proved him to be a great hero. he didn’t want to attend the war because he was happily married and had a lovely son. however, since his country was allied to mycenae, he had to take the command given by the king of mycenae.
i’m quite sure that the story of the wooden horse is widely known, however, few people know who thought of the brilliant idea, that’s why i admired odysseus so much because he was the person who got the idea. thanks to the horse, the ten-year war came to an end at last. if you want to know how the wooden horse worked, just read the book.
the ancient greeks believed that the gods and goddesses also played important roles in the origin, process and ending of the whole story.
the story of the golden apple was such an example.
when eris, the goddess of argument and disagreement, threw out the golden apple to a wedding ceremony on mount olympus, a dispute happened. hera, the queen of gods, athena, the goddess of wisdom, and aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, were all involved in the argument for the apple.
none of them was willing to give way, so they turned to paris for a final judgment. tempted by aphrodite’s beauty and promise, paris handed the apple to her. to keep her word, aphrodite helped him to get helen, the most beautiful woman in the world, as his wife. that was the cause of the war.
paris’s choice obviously annoyed the other two goddesses. so during the war, they helped the greek alliance army while some other gods, such as apollo and aphrodite, guarded troy.
when paris dueled with helen’s former husband menelaus, aphrodite saved paris when he was about to be finished off.
after the duel between those two people, there was a truce between the greek alliance and troy. however, both hera and athena were not happy to see it.
hera pursued her husband zeus:“ now, will you send athena to make the troyjans break the peace?”(page 22) then with zeus’s permission, athena went down to start the war again and finally she brought the greeks to success.
from the whole story, we can see that in ancient greeks’ view, gods sometimes played a much more important role in their life. however, with the rapid development of science, we have learned that the greek gods never existed. this is why a recent movie of troy has not mentioned a single god.
everything happened due to men’s ambition, love, loyalty or jealousy. with those emotion and people’s effort, we human beings can accomplish wonders and be master of the world.
god are of less importance than they used to be. nonetheless, the gods and goddesses made the story of troy more mysterious and marvelous.
i have learnt from the book more than the wonderful story of history, love and war. i believe that human can determine their destiny by their own. i highly recommend this book to my friends with the same interest.

苏菲的世界英文读后感
sophie's world is a novel by jostein gaarder, published in 1991. it was originally written in norwegian, but has been translated into english and many other languages.
i have to admit that i chose this book because of my curiosity. i have heard that sophie's world is a book with many difficulties because it’s a philosophy book. this book relates to some philosophy knowledge that we have not learnt form our textbooks. i have planned to spend plenty of time to study this book, but because of the limit of time, i can only take several days to finish it during the national day holiday. so there are still some theories that i can’t understand.
in this book, sophie amundsen is a fifteen year old girl living in norway in 1990. she lives with her cat, her goldfish, a tortoise, two budgerigars and her mother. her father is a captain of an oil tanker, and is away for most of the year. he does not appear in the book. sophie's life is rattled as the book
begins, when she receives two anonymous messages in her mailbox (who are you? where does the world come from? )。 shortly afterwards she receives a packet of papers, part of a course in philosophy. with these mysterious
communications, sophie becomes a fifteen-year-old philosopher. alberto knox teaches her about the history of philosophy. sophie learns about philosophy while being lectured by alberto, dressed as a monk, in an ancient church, and she learns about jean-paul sartre and simone de beauvoir. various
philosophical questions and methods of reasoning are put before sophie, as she attempts to work them out on her own.
i thought philosophy is an unreasonable study. however, after reading this book, i find that philosophy is a study which is closest to our lives.
philosophy is a subject relates to some questions that everybody in the world want to know. the aim of philosophy is to solve some problems that can not be proved by science, like good and evil, beauty and ugliness, life and death. i think philosophy is not a kind of science because it can not be measured and calculated. philosophy is a hypothetical interpretation about something that we never know and something we are not sure. it’s also the first step to pursue truth. in our world, we can not avoid disaster and despairing only with science. science brings us knowledge, but only can philosophy bring us wisdom. this is a good guide book to philosophy which is different from many other philosophy books. when i was reading it, it feels like a detective book. it let me think following sophie unconsciously and discuss the philosophy problems also call on some famous philosophers and understand them, walk into their world. this book has many contents but it is not confused. writer divided the book into some chapters and every chapter has its theme. and
every chapter can present several questions. this made readers can understand easily.
from hundreds of years ago, people from every ages and every nations are asking the same questions, as who am i? where does the world come from? just because of people’s curiosity, there is philosophy. but, regretfully, people’s curiosity started to decrease progressively because of their habits. when we are growing, we accept this world gradually and take everything around us for granted. of course, our curiosity will die out. from this part, our curiosity about the world is not match to children. however, philosophers are different because they will never get used to the world. to them, there are still something unreasonable in the world, as well as something complex and something mysterious. they watch this world in children’s view. so they can come up with many deep questions. so they are called wise men. i always think about myself whether i have lost my curiosity and whether i have to苏菲的世界读后感watch this world in a new way. maybe i can not think like children, but i can ask some more questions about the world.
there are many ideas in my mind, but i don’t know how to express them clearly. after reading this book, i acquire much knowledge about
philosophy and gain some enlightenment from it. maybe i should change my attitude towards life.
this book isn’t too difficult to understand. actually, it’s easy and
amusing. in each chapter, a fifteen-year-old girl asks questions to some famous philosophers that she doesn’t know. in the beginning, it is not
necessary to have many dialogs. so the writer used the way of letter to tell the story. since middle ages, it began talking face to face. these questions and answers are so natural that i always think it is true when i was reading. sophie was truly hiding in an eden filled with bush and experienced rainstorm and lightning on the square. the most important point is that these philosophers are wise but not sophisticated. every word and every example of them are so realistic. because of this, many abstract and dry theories are filled with the air of wisdom and beauty. however, the girl’s characters and qualities are not covered by these masters’ light. she is like a boat on the sea, tiny and tough. she has many her own ideas about these great theories, and it’s very special.()
however, it is not enough to let this book be a guide of philosophy only by this. the author uses several clues in this book. in the beginning of this book, we read the story about sophie, then philosophers. but, suddenly, there is an imaginary girl called cid, as well as her father who is working lebanon. cid’s father is like a god that can be everywhere. he uses every way to show that he exists, but he never let anybody see him. sophie’s world is very miraculous and fantastic. when she is studying philosophy, sophie is thinking about her own world at the same time. finally, they find the world which she has lived in for 15 years is only an imaginary world by a philosophy book of her
father. her families, classmates, house, pets, garden, and all kinds of feelings and thoughts are created by her father. her world is just somebody’s illusion and shadow.
to many chinese students, philosophy is hard to understand. but sophie's world this book makes philosophy easy to understand. it’s deep and amusing. after finishing the happy travel in this book about philosophy, readers can find the beacon in their lives. this is a world full of wisdom and dream. we can meet those famous philosophers, talk to them and understand them easily. every time when we meet them, we will be shocked by their great thoughts.
this book also tells me that result is less important than the process we get the result. in our lives, we should always ask but not accept. we should find the beauty of thinking.

jane eyre, is a poor but aspiring, small in body but huge in soul, obscure but self-respecting girl. after we close the covers of the book, after having a long journey of the spirit, jane eyre, a marvelous figure, has left us so much to recall and to think:
we remember her goodness: for someone who lost arms and blinded in eyes, for someone who despised her for her ordinariness, and even for someone who had hurt her deeply in the past.
we remember her pursuit of justice. it’s like a companion with the goodness. but still, a virtuous person should promote the goodness on one side and must check the badness on the other side.
we remember her self-respect and the clear situation on equality. in her opinion, everyone is the same at the god’s feet. though there are differences in status、in property and also in appearance, but all the human being are equal in personality.
we also remember her striving for life, her toughness and her confidence…
when we think of this girl, what she gave us was not a pretty face or a transcendent temperament that make us admire deeply, but a huge charm of her personality.

recently, i have reading the book "jane eyre”。
although i forgot some details in the book, jane gave me deeply impression, i admire her very much. after that the teacher also told us to put the play in to a movie, and then we all can touch each hero’s soul in the book. the play it mainly tell us how jane is growing up when suffering from great difficulties and painless. what's more, it is impressed me that she still love her master even if he is blind at last due to rescue his mad wife. and i like the classic lines what jane said to mr. rochester :"do you think i can stay to become nothing to you? do you think i am an automaton?--a machine without feelings? and can bear to have my morsel of bread snatched from my lips, and my drop of living water dashed from my cup?
do you think, because i am poor, obscure, plain, and little, i am soulless and heartless? you think wrong!--i have as much soul as you,--and full as much heart! and if god had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, i should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you. i am not talking to you now through the medium of custom, conventionalities, nor even of mortal flesh;--it is my spirit that addresses your spirit; just as if both had passed through the grave, and we stood at god's feet, equal,--as we are!" its so beautiful, jane is a girl who will never lose confidence in life and always sensible when handling with some motional problems. jane was huge in my heart. she can control her life and fate. she knew how to continue her life and she got it!
maybe after what she told me i have known that what love is and how to love and to be loved! the book is a book worth of reading, so all in all let’s enjoy it!
英文版读后感(三)
"love" in the history of english literature is handed down as a classic, it has successfully shaped the history of english literature first on love, life, society and religion, have taken a stand on one's own initiative and dare to struggle, dare to fight for freedom and equality of female image.
almost all women love foreign literature, like d charlotte's "in love".if we think that charlotte is only just to write this section of tangled up love to write "love".i think, sorry, that's not correct.the author also is a female, living in turbulent england in the middle of the nineteenth century, when the thoughts have a brand new start.and in "jane love" in infiltration is the largest such thoughts -- women's sense of independence.let us imagine, if jane love independent, has been killed in his childhood; if she did not share the independent, she already and wife rochester to live together, began to have money, a new life; if she is not that the purity, we are now in the hands of "jane love" is no longer a touching tears classic.so, i began to think, why "jane love" let us be moved, fondle admiringly -- she is independent personality, beckoning personality charm.
however, we can't help wanting to ask, only this step can be independent?i think i won't.after all, women's independence is a long-term process, not accomplish at one stroke.it needs a thorough courage, love was like jane decided to leave rochester, need "wind rustling xi the yi river is so cold, strong earth to did not return" heroic and courage.i think, this should be the most crucial one step, also should be the decisive step towards independence.and charlotte's jane love but her stubborn disposition, independent personality left us a moved.so she is successful, happy women.()
jane love has as an independent women's classic, i hope the sun, the flowers more jane love out, whether poor or rich,; whether beauty, or homely, have good heart and enrich the mind, can the independent personality and strong character life.

老人与海英文版读后感
my thoughts on the old man and the sea a man is not made for defeat, a man can be destroyed but not defeated. this sentence has lingered in my mind since i finished the book” the old man and the sea” in the face of fighting with this huge marlin, the old man did not release the fishing line in his hands for three days and nights, and the old man did not flinch when confronted with attack of sharks, but decided to pick up the wooden stick in the hands to defend their own harvest.
such a tough guy image suddenly highlighted in front of me, which made me admire him and cheer for his strong mind. challenge is of course nowhere in the present life. we need to learn from the old man who with a brave heart, in the face of challenges clenched his fist, rather than yield, avoid, and give up. in the boundless sea, the old man was sitting alone in the little sailing boat, and seemed so small under the setting sun in the distance, extraordinarily slim.
but the old man hadn’t caught one fish since 84days ago. in t such situation, the old man was still optimistic, looking at the sun rise and set, watching the looming moon, and enjoying the company of fish and birds, and talking with wind and water. he just became one part of the sea. the sea, kind and beautiful, finally gave the old man a big marlin but the ocean was also cruel- lots of sharks came flooding to rob the fish, trying beating the old man and crushing his "glory". the old man's loneliness and happy were associated with the sea, through whom, the author enthusiastically praise the human’s bravery when facing hardships. so no matter how difficult the things are, we all can't give up ourselves.
