there was a time when the local people in scotland had to pay the taxes and the beautiful girl’s fist night to english ruler in return for ‘protection’. if the money and the fair lady were not paid promptly, the english gangsters would quickly destroy their home and possesses.
one of the most excellent figures in scotland history was william wallace, who was born in 1272. when he was young, his father was dead in the war which against with the enemy and he was brought up by his uncle. during that period, william wallace learned the skill of fight and strategy of the war which make an important role of the later days.
william wallace unshakable faith touches my heart. not all the people are stood up to noble, opponents or even die. i admire william wallace for striving for freedom、his brave and cherishing his woman.
desire for freedom
when william wallace was child, his father and brother died for a fight .the word “free” first appeared in his mind through a dream that his father told him. (the concept of personal freedom was a concept not much celebrated in 1300)your heart was free; you needed to have the courage to follow it. a history about hero was begun. william wallace fought for scotland’s freedom in the 13th century, as longshanks want to rule a country of one that he arranged his son to marry the daughter of his rival, the king of france in order to control the political situation. longshanks did also grant nobles prima noctes, first night to draw more of his supporters to scotland. seeing their own woman robed by nobles, men could not tolerate these happened in scotland. as more and more nobles came to scotland, the local people suffered a lot from it. wallace's dying cry, as his body was stretched on the rack, was "freedom!" the time had come. william wallace killed the noble who infringed upon his beloved women. at that moment william wallace clearly realized that only freedom was primary condition to live a normal life. i remembered a sentence william wallace said: “i want children and a home and peace. i had asked god for these, but it is all for nothing if you don’t have freedom.” the power of words and strategies, william wallace influenced suffer people. and more and more people took part in fighting for freedom. his unshakable resolution leaded him to a battle about freedom. as his saying: wars could take our lives, but they would never take our freedom. his life’s purpose and personal mission statement was to pursue freedom.
brave made one fight against exploiters
through the cruel wars, he is an amazing battlefield strategist. facing a major challenge, he refused to be beguiled into surrender. william wallace is not naturally brave, because fight to the bitter end for peace and freedom. i think his brave heart derive from his childhood when he saw that the nobles’ army hurls rocks at each other for entertainment. later, when a scotsman has his wound numb, a saying came from his heart: “that’ll wake you up in the morning, boy!" just when they thought all hope was lost, william wallace still believed scotland would be one and freedom was not so far from them that created his brave heart—fight for freedom through wars. we can see his brave somewhere in this film such as routed one of longshanks’ garrisons and murdered his noble lord.; fight with the thousands of opponents in a war between english and scotland; invaded longshanks’ northern army in your; fought with longshanks face to face; consulted with robert the bruce about united the nobles to built a country of their own, even knew that would be grey. he was not the one to support the noble’s rights in scotland’s land, neither the balliol, william wallace’s hometown, but fought against exploiters and looked forward to peaceful life. brave heart was one of the important reasons that aroused people to fight for freedom and peaceful life. i think it was the power that took william wallace over the fear of death, the fuel that propelled him toward the life you envision.
true love under the war
everyone had his own true love, so did william wallace. he was crazy in pursuit of love. but it was a pity, because in the 13th the common survived as slaves and they had less right (or even had no right) to do what they want to do, slaved for nobles, died for nobles. love between william wallace and murron moved me to tears. they loved each other. they had their own land. their love was smashed by invaders’ selfish desire. poor murron was the victim in the war, even she was not wrong, but history arranged her dead in the 13th when a fight for freedom just begun. nowadays, the law has made to protect our right. we can hold fast to our ideal, such as life、job、love or other else. when i see historical films about love, i always sigh for the sad ending, which the main actor and the main actress separate, not because the ending of love, but for the history. thanks for william wallace; i deeply make sense of the love between people included kinship、friendship and affection. in the long history, people fought for freedom、rights and land all the time. today we are free, but how many people dare to pursue his love or ideal, and how many people see his relatives、friends or the one he deep in love getting on a train and going away. i think we should take measures to defend our true feeling and follow it. the love between william wallace and murron was wonderful because they had strived for each other.
william wallace, a hero of scotland, was excellent in scotland history. his brave heart、unshakable faith about fighting for freedom and love have never influencing the young generation less.
his heart will go on.

in times of anguish, we can find solace in art. a great movie can always offer you some kind of power to face your own problem. and this one did a good job. it brings us a tough hero, william wallace, leader of the scottish resistance forces against england’s rule. although he is dead at last, his spirit had led his people to fight and get freedom. this meaningful work has touched so many hearts by its significance theme and content.
the theme of this work can mainly be seen over the growing image of william wallace. first we see his childhood. his father was killed by the english intruder, which may definitely leave a scar on his heart. with this great hatred, when he saw his wife killed by the enemies, everything stuck deep down his heart was released all of a sudden with magnificent power. so in the fighting scene, we see a warrior dared his life waving the sword. it is a common wonder where his courage is from. let’s say, if it is an ordinary person, who lost his parents since he’s very young, he may not have the conviction to grow up as a hero. however, heroes are as heroes are.
wallace's revolution was significant, seen from many aspects, with great obstacles from his countrymen, as well as enemies. many scottish nobles lent him only grudging support as most of them were more concerned with wealth and titles than the freedom of the country. in fact, the scottish leaders are in favor of revolt-or not-depending on english bribes. wallace, by comparison, is a man of honor, incorruptible and righteous. he was knighted and proclaimed ‘guardian and high protector of scotland’, but as much as he railed against the scottish nobles, submitted to edward i, king of england, he was astonished and in shock to discover the treachery of the leading scot contender for the throne—robert, the earl of bruce—to whom he confided, ‘the people would follow you, if you would only lead them.’ sophie marceau is exquisite as the distressed princess isabella of france who ends up falling in love with wallace, warning him out of several traps. catherine mccormack is a stunning beauty who ignites wallace’s revolution. patrick mcgoohan is chilling, brutal, and vicious as the ruthless edward i, known by the nickname ‘long shanks.’ this king remains simply the embodiment of evil. while angus mcfadyen moves as a nobleman torn between his conscience and political aspiration, and brendan gleeson brings strength and humor to his role as the robust hamish, david o’hara is very effective as the crazy irishman who provides much of the film’s comic relief from even the most tensed moments. mel gibson has reason to be proud of this work. it is a motion picture that dares to be excessive… gibson presents passionately the most spaciously impressive battles (yet staged for films) even excessively, and it is his passion and excess that make the motion picture great. the horror and futility of massed hand-to-hand combats are exciting rather repulsive. it is epic film-making at its glorious best. this movie focuses on the human side of wallace, a character that is so immense, so intelligent, and so passionate, exploring the definitions of honor and nobility, pushing us to follow the hero into his struggle against injustice and oppression. and this is the power of a hero.
also, this movie is a red-blooded battle epic. not much is known about wallace, known as braveheart, except that according to an old epic poem, he unified the clans of scotland and won famous battles against the english before being captured, tortured and executed as a traitor.
wallace cried, as his body was stretched on the rack. that isn’t exactly based on fact (the concept of personal freedom was a concept not much celebrated in 1300), but it doesn’t stop gibson from making it his dying cry. it fits in with the whole glorious sweep of braveheart, which is an action epic with the spirit of the hollywood swordplay classics and the grungy ferocity of “the road warrior”。 what people are going to remember from the film are the battle scenes, which are frequent, bloody and violent. just from a technical point of view, braveheart does a brilliant job of massing men and horses for large-scale warfare on film. gibson deploys what look like thousands of men on horseback, as well as foot soldiers, archers and dirty tricks specialists, and yet his battle sequences don’t turn into confusing crowd scenes: we understand the strategy, and we enjoy the tactics even while we doubt some of them.
gibson is not filming history here, but myth. william wallace may have been a real person, but braveheart owes more to prince valiant, rob roy and mad max. once we understand that this is not a solemn historical reconstruction (and that happens pretty fast), we accept dialogue that might otherwise have an uncannily modern tone, as when braveheart issues his victory ultimatum to the english. in the film, wallace's chief antagonist is king edward i, played by patrick mcgoohan with sly cunning; he is constantly giving his real political interpretation of events, and that's all the more amusing since he’s usually guessing in a wrong way.
edward’s son, the prince of wales, is a very weak role who marries a french woman only for political reasons and he’s a gay himself. even his father doesn’t like him. “i may have to conceive the child myself!” the king says, and indeed, under the medieval concept, or “first night,” nobles were allowed a first chance to sleep with the wives of scottish men. the princess, played by the french actress sophie marceau, does not much admire her husband, who spends most of his time hanging about moon-eyed with his best friend (until the king, in a fit of impatience, hurls the friend out the castle window)。
edward, smarting from defeats, dispatches the princess to offer his terms to braveheart, but soon she’s spilling all the state secrets, “because of the way you look at me.” the princess is the second love in wallace’s life; the first, his childhood sweetheart murron (catherine mccormack), marries him in secret. the two spend their wedding night outdoors, and the backlit shot as they embrace gains something, i think, from the frost on their breaths.
these characters come from hardened stock. when wallace has a reunion with his childhood pal hamish, they hurl rocks at each other for entertainment; later, when a scotsman has his wound cauterized all he says is, “that’ll wake you up in the morning, boy!” it is sometimes seen as an egotistical gesture when actors direct themselves, especially in heroic epics costing $53 million. the truth is, given this material, i do not know that anyone could have directed it better. gibson marshals his armies of extras, his stunt men and his special effects, and creates a fictional world that is entertaining, and thrilling.
and as to braveheart, gibson plays his role with flamboyance, and cuts it with sly humor. he is an amazing battlefield strategist, inventing new strategies and weapons, outsmarting the english at every turn, leading his men into battle with his face painted blue, like a football fan. there is a scene where he is so pumped up with the scent of battle that his nostrils flare; not many actors could get away with that, but gibson can.
in the meanwhile, this movie is a very touching love story. william lost beloved woman, it means losing the only love of life, suddenly of heart desperate for power, revenge for the loss of love, so he killed the scottish soldiers and chieftains. i understand it as a fight for the love of battle.
this is actually a blasting fuse, the real highlight of the scottish people with the pursuit of freedom in william's leadership, the struggle against the king of england. so we can say that the light of freedom is the most eye-catching thing. however, human nature once again deceived william, when he was betrayed noble chieftains sent after the trial units in england, when william learned that his dream of freedom can be completed, and only mind eagerly looking forward to it! at the time, as long as he can head down to england, he confessed to treason and asked for mercy, he can get the most enjoyment of relief, replacing many of the lingering death of torture. but william the final calls out from the throat or the “free” word. this is his deep, strong cry, he would rather lose his body could not betray his heart! england at this time the public was moved by whom, and they seem to see a real hero! william has a brave heart!
william’s life was strangled and decapitated! when the ax head down towards him the moment he saw his wife the former founder directed at his smile, seemed to admire his courage, love and freedom, while william seems to have been! brave heart, after all, is the brave! he uses his own blood stirred up the scottish people longing for freedom!
sudden death, left to the people is a constant moving! able to adhere to the death of their convictions, this is a heroic bosom. free about life, william has become a finished, for this faith, have nothing to fear death?
today, we are in a period of relative peace; the meaning of freedom seems to transform our way of interpreting it. so, what belief is it that touches the bottom of our souls? what does william’s spirit mean? have a belief, this belief should work hard to our spiritual life is a driving force upward, right? otherwise, our souls will be slack, will be illusory, in that sense, we have one of their own faiths, although not great and noble william, but enough to sustain our lives! it is the innocent and romantic memory of first love full of fragrance of purple thistle that invokes william wallace in returning homeland. the purple thistle that murron gives william wallace at his father’s burial symbolizes the immortal love. under the horrible shade of cruel oppression of england they struggle for their perfect love courageously. unfortunately, murron is seized and killed ruthlessly by an english official so that william wallace’s heart is stricken by great grief and pain. the moment he kills the wicked official to take his revenge he realizes the essential responsibility placed on his shoulders. he changes his individual anguish into enormous power of national spirit so as to devote himself to the innumerable and arduous combats for the great freedom of scotland.?during war, maybe the most fatal threat is not the formidable weapons but the confused and evil hearts. the scottish aristocrats yield to england and betray william wallace twice. it is in the second time william wallace is arrested and killed inhumanly.
the most touching and affecting scene is that at the last moment of his life, enduring inconceivable torture, william wallace exhausts himself to shout out: “freedom!” to the boundless sky and the people. at the gate of paradise, his beloved wife---murron is waiting for his coming. his brave heart wins everything, including the heart of murron, the most elegant heart of princess of england (played by sophie marceau) and the countless people’s hearts. through the dignified ablution of blood, all the burden and hardship are released from his respectable and noble soul. supported and encouraged by william wallace’s eternal spirit, at the great expense of countless precious lives, scotland wins her freedom.
people who have seen this film will never forget when william wallace’s strong voice “freedom!” echoes in minds of the entire human race; the sky of scotland emerges in our eyes. a wonderful movie can hit people’s hearts, however this time, not with beautiful scenes or gorgeous actors and actress, but with the pursuit of love and freedom in people’s hearts.
this is a simple story about a loyal dog. there is no intricate plot, and even it is only a straight still, but it was still moved me deeply with its most simple pieces of normal life which we can easily find around us such as the train station, the restaurant, the food stand and a warm home. maybe you will only think it is a moving film; maybe you had been impressed by the loyal of the dog; or maybe you will think there is nothing special and it is just a movie. but i view it differently.
the story is rearranged by a real story. hatchi is an unusual dog which belongs to akita. the real hatchi, the dog in this story, was born in odatr japan in 1923. as soon as his master dr. eisabour uero, a professor at tokyo university, died in may 1925. hatchi returned to the shibuya train station the next day after professor died and for the next nine years to wait, until hatchi himself died.
in the movie hatchi crossed an ocean and thousands of miles of transportation by train, and then he met parker (the main actor) in a snowy day. because it was snowing and the dog, hatchi, was lost. parker took hatchi back to his home, and then kept it. parker treated it very well and so did hatchi. when hatchi had grown up, he fetched parker to work everyday.
all these years they played together, bathed together, slept together and parker gave hatchi full-body massage everyday. they just look like a couple. parker looks happy because hatchi is happy, and hatchi’s happy due to parker being happy. but hatchi never fetched ball for anyone even parker, so he went to his japanese friend, ken, for help. ken told parker that the akita will never get the ball unless there are some special reasons. however, parker didn’t notice what ken told him. in the morning of last day of parker’s life, hatchi felt that something bad would happen to parker, and it tried his best to stop parker going to work, and hatchi fetched ball for parker to tell him to stop. but it was pity that parker only paid all his attention to hatchi’s first fetching and ignored the special reasons of fetching. he said “come on boy, i have to go to work or i’ll be late. see you at 5. stay! go home! go on.” finally, the old professor, parker, hadn’t come back as he said, and he will never come back. he broke the engagement he made with hatchi. he left everybody on the earth up to heaven. as the old professor’s friends and relatives nobody could accepted the fact that parker has dead. as the result, professor’s wife, kate, escaped all the staff which will let she recall the memories about parker, so she sold the house where they used to live and was away from the small town. meanwhile she sent hatchi to her daughter, but hatchi always ran out of her house, and try its best to back to station, because hatchi and professor had a deal to meet each other. he’s so firmly persisted on the engagement that parker’s daughter, andy, had to gave up and let it go. while, have you ever noticed the detail that how unwilling hatchi was when it left professor, because hatchi can’t apart with andy, too. but he missed parker too much, he had to andy and his warm home.
then hatchi spent ten years waiting for his master, his only friend coming back. ten years time, maybe it is just one-tenth of a human life, but for a dog that means its whole life. during those years hatchi hadn’t exact place to live, just come and go to the train station everyday at the same place and time.
have you even considered why hatchi spent all his life just for waiting? after a long time consideration, i find the answer in the end. the only reason is that hatchi have nothing but his master. the happiest time of hatchi is the time with parker; the most enjoyable time of hatchi is the time fetching parker to work.
just one year after parker’s death, ken came to the station and had a look at hatchi. he felt as sorrow as hatchi. he tried his best to persuade hatchi to leave because parker’s never coming back. but he didn’t succeed, and said “if hatchiko wants to wait, then hatchiko should wait. you want to wait for him, didn’t you? then, you most have a long life.”
then ten years past, hatchi became a dirty and rather old guy. over these years, everything had changed but hatchi’s endless waiting and loyalty had never changed. one day parker’s wife backed to the small town and saw hatchi was still stand there waiting. she cried and said “you, old thing, you are still waiting, let me wait for the next train together with you please.” hearing these tough words and seeing the loyal dog i cried sadly.
this is hatchi’s whole life. he almost spent all his life only doing one thing—waiting for its only friend parker, waiting to complete the uncompleted engagement.
hatchi’s story showed how great the power of loyalty and love is with all his life. he tell us what the real loyalty and true love is. because of the real loyalty and true love hatchi spent all his life waiting; because of the real loyalty and true love hatchi sacrisficed all his youth just for waiting; because of the real loyalty and true love hatchi abandon the warm house of parker’s daughter. i think that is the real loyalty, the ture love. however, in our human life, how many of us can be as loyalty as an animal; how many person can be loyal to another one for even ten years? i think nobody can.
in the end of the film parker’s grandson asked kate “where did grandpa found hatchi?” she answered “i suppose that hatchi happened to found your grandpa.” i believe that as soon as parker and hatchi happened to meet, hatchi had already found its own destination, and then the loyalty and love was built.
loyalty isn’t mean to be that i love you and it won’t change in the next ten thousand years; loyalty isn’t mean to be that i will wait for you for the rest of my life; loyalty isn’t mean to be that i love you beyond myself. however, loyalty is a sense of responsibility; loyalty is a sense of selfness, loyalty is a sense of concern.
the word “loyalty” is consisting of 7 letters, and i think each letter stand for different meanings:
l —— life
o —— obligation
y —— yes
a —— attention
l —— love
t —— total
y —— you
actually, to be loyal to someone is easy is easy to say, but hard to do. to be loyal, you should never forget anyone that you loved.
